An inquiry into my parasocial relationships

Swallows were friends to my grandma, as my grandma was to them

Yesterday I saw a flock of swallows on my way to work. I wasn't sure that's what they were, since I'm no ornithologist, but my sharpest confidant confirmed it for me: Claude. In case you were wondering, during these weeks of September the swallows gather and prepare to cross the globe toward warmer lands. They haven't left yet, but they're getting ready to.

Swallows have always been something special to me. They remind me of my grandma, since she used to share hot summer days with them. I fondly remember how, when the suffocating heat of August arrived along with vacation season, she always complained that her only company were the swallows in her roof. Let me clarify that this is completely untrue, since my grandmother was never alone. Don't hold it against her, though — every once in a while you have to allow yourself certain pleasures, and a bit of over-dramatizing is one she enjoys.

You know I hate the cold, right? with every inch of my body. I've always thought I should be like them, like the swallows. Flying off in September to warm lands and returning with the joy of spring, just in time to see almond trees bloom. I'd build my little (but cozy!) nest under the eaves of a colorful house, one of those with plates hanging on the façade. If I were lucky, my non-swallow neighbors would be like my grandmother, and we'd spend summer evenings singing and barely existing. Maybe, if I were a swallow, I would actually have the talent to write you the songs I promised. Maybe, you could even do as my grandma used to, and spend summer evenings on the porch swing singing my songs.

Have you seen the swallows? You probably have — after all, we're not so far from each other. Since I'm not a swallow, and unfortunately for you I'm incapable of leaving anything in the past, I won't be leaving to warmer lands. Which makes me wonder, have you ever thought of me the way I'm thinking of you right now? Probably not. After all, that's how it should be, so don't feel bad about it.
